Nourish Juice: Cold Pasteurization Collaboration by Petainer and Hiperbaric

Nourish Juice

Nourish Juice Bar is a USDA Organic certified and Certified B Corp company based in Kennett Square, PA. Founded by Francine Covelli—a nutritionist, chef, and community leader—Nourish is dedicated to producing cold-pressed juices that not only deliver exceptional nutritional benefits but also embody a commitment to sustainability and community impact.

With a mission to inspire and give back, Nourish Juice Bar sought a packaging solution that would extend shelf life, maintain product quality, and reduce operational costs, while staying true to its eco-conscious values. The answer came through a groundbreaking collaboration with Hiperbaric, a global leader in High-Pressure Pasteurization (HPP) technology, and Petainer’s one-way PET kegs—the world’s first kegs approved for HPP.

The Challenge: Short Shelf Life, Sustainability & Operational Efficiency

For cold-pressed juices, preserving fresh flavour and nutrients without resorting to heat treatments is a significant challenge. Nourish Juice Bar needed to overcome several hurdles to meet its high standards:

  • Limited Shelf Life: Unpasteurized cold-pressed juices have a short shelf life, leading to higher waste and logistical challenges in reaching distant markets.
  • Maintaining Organic & Nutritional Integrity: The brand's commitment to organic and natural ingredients necessitated a cold pasteurization process that avoids compromising flavor, color, or vital nutrients.
  • High Operational Costs: Traditional steel keg systems require significant capital investment and complex cleaning processes involving water and chemicals—resources that conflict with Nourish’s sustainable practices.
  • Need for a Single-Package Solution: To serve multiple locations efficiently, Nourish needed a packaging format that could handle HPP while streamlining distribution without the burdens of return logistics.

The Solution: HPP-Approved Petainer One-Way PET Kegs

In response to these challenges, Nourish Juice Bar partnered with Hiperbaric and adopted Petainer’s one-way PET kegs—an innovative solution that supports High-Pressure Pasteurization. This packaging not only meets the rigorous requirements of HPP but also aligns with the company’s eco-friendly values. Key features of the solution include:

  • HPP Compatibility: Petainer kegs are engineered to withstand up to 6,000 bar of pressure, ensuring that the HPP process effectively neutralizes pathogens while preserving the juice’s natural flavor and nutrients.
  • Extended Shelf Life: The combination of HPP and PET kegs has extended the shelf life of Nourish’s products to 75 days, significantly reducing spoilage and waste.
  • Single-Use & Fully Recyclable: The one-way design eliminates the need for return logistics, saving on costs and simplifying operations. The kegs are 100% recyclable, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to sustainability.
  • Reduced Operational Costs: Pre-sanitized and ready-to-fill, these kegs bypass the need for water-intensive cleaning cycles and the associated labor and energy costs.

Results & Impact: Enhanced Efficiency, Expanded Market Reach & Sustainability

Adopting Petainer’s HPP-approved one-way PET kegs has transformed Nourish Juice Bar’s operations, delivering multiple benefits that have helped the company expand its market presence:

  • Extended Product Shelf Life: With a shelf life extended to 75 days, Nourish can distribute its juices over greater distances without compromising quality.
  • Lower Capital and Operational Expenses: The elimination of steel keg returns and washing requirements has reduced both the upfront investment and ongoing maintenance costs.
  • Simplified Logistics: The lightweight and single-use design streamlines distribution, reducing shipping complexities and lowering transportation costs.
  • Stronger Sustainability Credentials: The use of recyclable PET kegs minimizes water and chemical usage, lowering the overall carbon footprint and reinforcing the brand’s eco-friendly image.
  • Market Expansion: These operational improvements have enabled Nourish to reach a wider audience, meeting high consumer demand while ensuring each bottle of juice retains its fresh taste and nutritional value.

The Petainer Keg itself is a great package, and their support in working with Hiperbaric on HPP inspired me to move forward. It aligns with our Nourish values—100% recyclable, lightweight, and sustainable.
