What happens if a keg gets hot inside a cargo container?

Like any pressurised containers, Petainer kegs are entirely safe when transported within the correct temperature guidelines. They should be stored at 20 – 22°C/68-72 F, although higher temperatures (up to 30°C/86 F) can be tolerated for short periods of up to one week. Temperature tests of up to 50°C/122 F have been undertaken. Results indicate that Petainer kegs still perform within specifications, but the shelf life of the product is reduced.

How to use a keg?

Can a bar’s beer line be cleaned while dispensing from a keg?

All Petainer kegs with NPR (no pressure relief) function can get dispensed like steel kegs and for Petainer kegs with PR (pressure relief) function, please follow our “use and disposal” instructions related to the type of keg you are using.

Are Petainer kegs safe?

Yes, when using Petainer kegs according to our instructions and specifications, Petainer kegs are easy to handle and safe for products. Our kegs are available in two versions, with and without “pressure relief function”. For kegs with pressure relief function, the system is automatically depressurised at decoupling after dispensing. The Classic kegs are protected by outer packaging, either cardboard or a polypropylene box. The Hybrid kegs are puncture resistant and both Classic and Hybrid kegs are supplied with PRTs as standard.

What is the shelf life of my product in a Petainer keg?

The shelf life offered by any container is influenced by the sterility of the product inside, the filling process and the sterility of the container. The ability of the container to prevent the ingress of oxygen/egress of CO2 and protect from UV light are also important. Our kegs are delivered clean and microbiologically sterile according to our specifications. Petainer kegs contain an active O2 barrier (oxygen scavenger) and a passive CO2 barrier (Nylon) and have inbuilt light and UV protection up to 500nm.

As such, they can offer a shelf life equal to or better than any “standard” metal containers and provide a filled shelf life of 9 months. Once the keg is tapped and operational, the product inside the keg is recommended to be used with a shelf life of 6-9 weeks (depending on the dispensing hygiene).

Can Petainer kegs be used in hot areas?

To avoid foaming, Petainer kegs should be dispensed up to 30°C /86 F degrees and stored in a cool environment.

What are the risks of keg bursting?

When filled, handled and transported correctly, Petainer kegs are completely safe. For your security, the following should be observed:

Are all the materials and components completely recyclable?

Yes, Petainer kegs are recyclable in a standard plastic recycling stream. To learn more, see our Keg Disposal videos.

Can Petainer one-way kegs be used and filled immediately?

Yes, Petainer Keg is delivered clean, pre-purged with N2 and ready to fill – no water, steam, or chemical cleaning agents needed.

Does the keg fit my standard tapping equipment?

Yes, Petainer kegs can be tapped to standard and Micromatic-compatible coupling systems (A-, S-, D- and G-Type), no conversion and additional investment are necessary.

Can I manually fill a keg?

Yes, according to the available Manual Filling Instructions and videos. Learn more about keg filling.

Can the kegs be filling up-right and upside down?

Petainer kegs can be filled both up-right and upside down.

Can Petainer kegs be filled on my existing filling lines?

Yes, for filling on steel keg lines, Petainer offers two options: the new Hybrid keg and the Classic keg in the adapter. Please contact Petainer for the relevant “filler set up” instructions and the filling machine supplier for advice, format parts and program modifications.

Is a blown keg delivered sterile and pressurised with CO2?

Classic and Hybrid Kegs are delivered clean and microbiologically sterile according to our specifications. They are pressurised with sterile air. Before filling, kegs must be purged (to remove O2) using inert gas – typically CO2 or N2. Hybrid kegs are delivered pre-flushed with N2 (>99% N2 in the keg). Both Classic and Hybrid kegs produced in the US are pre-flushed with N2 (>99% N2 in the keg, 0,7 bar/10,5PSI)

they eliminate costs generated by high steel kegs losses due to theft or damage.
No Capex and a reduced price pack per L, versus high Capex investments in steel kegs renewals
No Capex needed to cover seasonal peaks and volume growth, versus high Capex investments required by steel kegs
